New Urban Arts and Central High School seek a VISTA with a strong interest in youth development to assist with the implementation and day-to- day operations of a new after school program at Central High School.
New Urban Arts is a nationally recognized community-based art studio and gallery for high school students and emerging artists. Since 1997, we have served more than 3,000 Providence teens and 175 artists. Each year, our public programs reach over 3,000 visitors and participants. Our mission is to build a vital community that empowers young people as artists and leaders to develop a creative practice they can sustain throughout their lives.
Central High School is one of the lowest performing high schools in the state of Rhode Island; it is a priority school, targeted for state intervention. 60% of students are chronically absent, and 92% of students qualify for free or reduced price lunch. A new, joint initiative between New Urban Arts and Central High School is designed to provide afterschool activities and enrichment opportunities to the youth in this community who need them most.
